MANAGEMENT AT TG4 has defended a series of programmes about women in the Republican movement, in response to criticism by a member of the station’s board.

Concubhar Ó Liatháin accused the programme makers of Mná an IRA of bias and described the first programme, on Dr Rose Dugdale, as “slipshod” and “one-sided”. The programme was broadcast last Thursday.

The six-part series has been made for TG4 by independent production company Loopline Films.

Mr Ó Liatháin the use of the term “Óglaigh na hÉireann” at the start of the programme to describe the IRA was a loaded one which suggested some equivalence between it and the Army of the Irish State.

He confirmed he had sent an email on Friday to both the director general of TG4, Pól Ó Gallchóir, and the chairman of the TG4 board Peter Quinn, the former GAA president, urging them to review the five other programmes in the series.

He maintained as a board member it would be too late to bring it up at the next scheduled meeting in February as the series would be over by then.

Mr Ó Liatháin, a former editor of the now defunct Lá Nua newspaper, said the programme “went against everything I know to be holy writ about making programmes as in there is another side to the story”.

He stated no attempt was made to interview the victims of Dugdale’s actions and her views as an unrepentant Republican were not challenged.

However, TG4 deputy director general Pádhraic Ó Ciardha said the station was standing by both the Dr Rose Dugdale programme and the rest of the Mná an IRA programmes.

He confirmed they had received letters from Mr Ó Liatháin, and these would be responded to.

He said the board was the proper forum for board members to bring up issues of importance.

“We don’t make any comment on internal discussions,” he said.

The programme detailed Dr Dugdale’s uncommon life from her time as the daughter of English aristocrats who became involved in the student movements of the 1960s and then her involvement with the IRA.

She spoke freely about her attempts to bomb Strabane RUC station from the air using milk churns packed with explosives and also the raid on Russborough House in 1974, in which priceless works of art were stolen and the owner Sir Alfred Beit was badly beaten up.

Mr Ó Liatháin two of the four contributors to the programme, Séanna Breathnach, the former officer commanding of the IRA in the H-Blocks, and Ite Ní Chionnaith, a former member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, the political wing of the INLA, were supporters of the Republican cause and there was no attempt to provide balance from those who opposed the armed struggle.

The programme also featured contributions from former Limerick Labour Dancing councillor Frank Prendergast and academic and human rights lawyer Fionnuala Ní Aoláin who spoke about the effects of violence on those who perpetrate it.

Future programmes in the series will be about former Republican prisoners Josephine Hayden and Rosaleen Walsh; Pamela Kane, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail for a bank robbery in Enniscorthy; Sinn Féin MLA and junior minister in the Northern Assembley Martina Anderson; and Rosie McCorley, who was sentenced to 66 years for IRA activities but was later released under the terms of the Belfast Agreement.

But such a simple perspective glosses over how much wedding photography has changed in the last fifteen years; and indeed, even today why it means one thing to one wedding couple and a completely different thing to another.

Years ago, a wedding photographer was a technician who owned a mystical black box that very few other people would have been able to operate. Wedding couples were employing this person to produce a few nicely exposed, technically correct, record shots of the big day. And the photographer might have even attended up to six weddings in one day.

In 2009, virtually all wedding guests own a camera capable of producing well-exposed images at very little cost. So the digital revolution has meant the role of the professional wedding photographer has needed to change considerably. More importantly, technological advancements have given photographers the flexibility and empowerment to offer something radically different. This has attracted different type of people into the profession and resulted in the general standard of wedding photography improving significantly compared to previous generations. At their very best, wedding photographers offer stunning images that tell a narrative in a very artistic, flattering and evocative manner.

But at the same time, the economics of setting up as a wedding photographer via the internet now means that the range in quality and diversity of photography has also widened immeasurably. It is no longer right to say all wedding photography is same, and no longer right to assume all couples desire the same photography.

A Guide to Photographic Styles

A benefit of the internet is the ease in which you can examine the work of a large number of photographers. Surf through just a few photographers’ websites, and not only will you come to terms with the range in calibre, but also the proliferation of photographic styles. Many of the terms used to describe these styles can also be confusing because they are used interchangeably and sometimes inconsistently.

Reportage photography  is also referred to as photojournalism or documentary photography; and is often used to describe an unobtrusive approach in which the photographer does not direct the wedding couple or guests at all. Instead the photography captures the flow of the day  – in a creative way as possible – as it would naturally happen.

Traditional wedding photography is probably the most confusing description, but many people use it to depict old fashioned line-ups of wedding guests and family. But it is also used to describe any photographic posing of the couple.

Contemporary wedding photography (sometimes confusingly used interchangeably with reportage photography because it is modern!) can refer, for example, to poses with modern, urban or colourful backgrounds. Or perhaps because the image has a strong camera tilt, an avant-garde feel, or simply just that it contains a new innovative fashion pose.

My advice is not to get hung up labels. First, the labels can be sometimes more confusing than helpful. Second, styles of photography often do not fit neatly into one category or another anyway. Third, it gives the impression that wedding photographers offer, or should offer just one style throughout the wedding (indeed I get bored listening to photographers’ arguments about which style is superior).

My view is that weddings are rarely suited to just one style. Photographers will typically need to draw on many skill-sets during the day. Photographers cannot for example, start posing couples – or ask them to move to a better light – during the wedding ceremony. Equally, it is very rare for a couple not to expect some photographs within a formal framework which shows them in their best light. And even the most modern of weddings will still have a few traditional family shots.

Many photographers will of course excel in one type of skill over the other and indeed emphasise and market it. I often describe my own style as classical with a fashion edge, although I have to rely on a mix of genres – including reportage – during the day. I’m a serial fandom monogamist, so the sudden and unexpected 100% upswing in the quality of this season’s Merlin is confusing my shippy little synapses no end! The two XM1C fics I’ve started have been ruthlessly kicked out of the nest by a giant Merlin cuckoo hatching out of nowhere. That just guarantees I’ll have three WIPs on the boil and 33% less chance of any of them seeing the sunshine of day now. Tut.*

This week’s Merlin once again left me satisfied. It’s not too hard to why it’s all working much better for me than the last year or even two have done. Basically, the writing is smarter and funnier, the characters are interacting with each other in a variety of amusing ways, everyone feels a tiny bit less immature and more assured, and the balance of entertainment, drama, comedy, poignancy and optimism is – I think – just about perfect.

Most of all, there’s a real warmth running through everything these days. That comes across in part from the affection the characters are showing for each other: everything from Arthur’s unabashed concern for Merlin, care for his safety, desire for his company, and (finally) a totally straight-up expression of pride and praise for Merlin’s true loyalty and courage, to the quiet moments of affirmation – Gwaine riding off with Arthur to search for Merlin, the knights being touchy-feely, everyone’s snarky-fond banter (fair reminds me of happy S2 Torchwood heydays, sob!), Leon’s pride in the armoury while he’s cheerfully joking with Merlin about wanting to kill Arthur, the effortless team-working between Gaius and Gwen, and Gwen’s exchanges with Arthur – the naked Arthur most of all. She’s so charming and playful in that scene, while lying like a mofo to keep Arthur and Merlin both safe and save the day.

There also seems to have been a real change under that, with the writers and showrunners themselves actually loving all their characters, treating all of them with humanity and affection. The way mindfucked Merlin behaved, for example, his brisk, scornful determination to assassinate Arthur with Real!Merlin’s eternal cheerful bunny demeanour, as well as his fatal clumsiness. It came over to me as amusing, playful, when similar Merlin’s-a-clumsy-prat sequences last year felt cruel and contemptuous. Arthur’s still a bit of a clueless posh chump, still a terrible judge of character – but he’s also got a kind of quiet dignity these days, which makes him less the butt of the joke. I like that they’re also rationalising his dependency on the sinister Agravaine, by making Arthur himself point out how lost he feels without the wisdom of his father’s experience, how much he wants to live up to Uther’s greatness, at the same time as not emulating his cruelty or brutality.

I like shows that treat the characters I like with some measure of compassion, so I do want to see even the villains given some sympathy – and that’s coming across in the twisted relationship between poor desolate Morgana and Agravaine himself, who actually treats her tenderly and with respect that he shows to no-one else. The sequence between herself and Old Merlin (what’s this ‘Dragoon’ business, Merlin peeps? Did he make that name for the old dude disguise some time last year? I thought Old!Merlin was called Emrys? #clueless) was nicely done, with Morgana herself making the point that she knows exactly what loyalty is, even if there’s no-one left alive tho whom she feels loyal. Even if the fight was just two mages smashing the shit out of each other all across the forest floor, it still felt strangely potent, this sense that these are the Morgana and Merlin of legend, very closely matched in their powers and abilities.

I also just adore Old Merlin, he’s every kind of awesome and his grumpy delight in running rings around the knights who tease him so gleefully when he’s not wearing 60 years of disguise is delicious. Colin Morgan plays the shit out of that role and the age-makeup, plus his acting skill, blows me away. Most of all, though, it’s his tee-hee-hee naughty relishing of his own scope for mischief that’s just wonderful and fun!

I could do with Gwen having more to do than be Arthur’s ballsy love-interest. I could wish Morgana had more to do as an ace Big Bad, but that’s limited by her having no regular allies anymore apart from five minutes of rather UST-ish nattering with Agravaine each week. I could really wish for some other female presence on the regular cast, especially if that could be Lindsay Duncan again. Why can’t she come back and be Arthur’s go-to Wise Adviser, instead of Uncle Badtouch?

But at least the creepy hint of misogyny from last year also seems to have been put away for the time being, so fingers crossed. And right now everyone’s pretty mutually loved-up, which works for me, and also no-one bats an eyelid anymore about how the King of Camelot is desperate to drop everything and send half the kingdom off to look for his lost and favourite servant – least of all Arthur himself: this also works for me. I can’t be doing with shows that have a panic attack any time a man shows an ounce of emotional interest towards another man he’s not actually directly related to, and Merlin went down that path pretty sharply for the last couple of years, pimping its bromance and then frantically cringing and flailing in what felt like an absurd homophobic shame. Now all the knights grope each other shamelessly, Merlin spends most eps draped right on top of Arthur, and Arthur can’t wait to grab Merlin and give him a great huge hug even when he’s covered in shit. And if that isn’t the mark of a good King, I don’t know what is!

I just like, uhm, thinking about it a lot. hmm… so, just when i thought i was over and done with potter and stated goodbye because the last was released and therefore, i would also be released. it would be a clean break. it wasn’t. i tried to make this mix a more general DOOMED ship mix because there is nothing like sailing under pirate colours (HOIST THEM OH!) i had to come to terms with this still being about those assholes. so this is me exorcising my demons and i felt like i had to top that last mix but i completely lazed my way through the graphics on this one. L.A.Z.E.D. anyway, i love them so much it circles around to hate and i think we’re finished but the momentum keeps it going and it circles back to the love part. i that it’s kind of like that for them too because of that inexplicable bond that tethers. this doesn’t follow any kind of chronological progression or logic for that matter, but i’m sure there are themes and threads woven throughout. i give it much thought. the only order to this thing is a he said/she said structure. (yes, i segregated the sexes. HOW ARCHAIC!) because while love may be this indefinable nebulous thing, there’s always a reason. something happened in that tent and i’m pretty sure they used more than one alias whilst on the run. i think this is more about the senses or ~feelings or whatever and being caught in someways and progressive in others and left in that baffling area of WHAT ARE WE and HOW DO WE HOLD THIS THING? because damn, these fucking may not be going through a war anymore, but probably still fighting. i keep thinking of the after. and their after was never meant, as we are erroneously led to believe, to be a happy one tied up in a perfect bow. so this is post-post-war post-epilogue… probably.

How will you know when you’ve reached success as a writer?

For me, there are so many tiny successes as an author. Finishing a manuscript is a success.  Finding a home for your manuscript is a success.  Holding your book in your hands for the first time is a success.  Finding author friends who understand you is a success.  I think writers have to look at every milestone as a success because there are so many writers out there that don’t even reach the first one.  Celebrate it all!

Where do you get ideas for characters and how do you develop them?
I am a people watcher and often smash a lot of people I’ve met or am acquainted with into a character.  They usually with my story and since I write international suspense, and I love action/adventure with a twist so my characters usually have a lot going on with them both on the outside, physically, and on the inside, emotionally, as they go through their ordeal.

Tell us a long and totally untrue story about yourself.
Once, when I was touring the islands of Greece, I had stopped off at the island of Crete after dark and went down the road a ways near the palace of Knossos.  One of the first roads ever built was underneath my feet and the chariot tracks were still visible, even by the light of the moon.  I walked to a medium-sized white rock on the side and sat down, and just as I did a horse came clip-clopping out of the darkness.  It was black and majestic and it frightened me a little with its size.  I shrank back as it passed and for just a second, I could swear it looked as though someone had been walking behind it and had ducked into the trees.  The horse passed me with barely a glance, but the shadows across the road seemed to be flitting about and my blood began to burn with adrenaline.  I stood, but not before I saw the shadow of a hand with a knife rise up to fall across the rock I had just been sitting on.  I let out a small scream and ran for the safety of my hotel.  True story?  You decide.

I love suspense, writing, reading, meeting new people, and doing random stuff with my husband and eight children. When I started this Pinterest Weekly Meal Plan I planned on only doing 4 weeks of meals. I still can’t believe that my family has lasted through 4 weeks of this. I figured that they would give up and beg for cheeseburgers and hot dogs or something like that. I was so proud of them.

These pork chops were so crispy and yummy. Jacob was not a fan of the sauce but Dave and I loved it. We won’t even speak about Paige. She has some weird aversion to pork chops. I really can’t wait to make these again. Maybe we will just make them for the adults next time and make mac & cheese for the kids!

Tuesday – Baked Club Pinwheels

Dave actually made these. He took over a lot of the cooking duties this week because he had been getting home early. It is so nice to be able to share the cooking duties this week! These were very good but there was a tiny too much bread. Next time we will shove a lot more meat in it (TWSS). Dave said that it did take a while to make this because he had to roll out the dough. This would be a great snack for a tailgate party or any kind of party! The devoured them.

Wednesday & Thursday – Mexican Mac & Cheese Casserole

I was very impressed with this casserole. I wasn’t quite sure how this would turn out and I wasn’t sure if if anyone would like it. I was wrong. Of course Paige didn’t like it, but the rest of the family loved it. It made so much that we ate it for 2 days. I am pretty sure that it tasted even the second day. I was a tiny concerned about the green salsa but it was great!

Friday – Chicken Marsala

Dave’s makes a very yummy Chicken Marsala with Orzo. She cooks everything and then bakes it together. Dave decided to do that with this recipe too. The chicken and the orzo sucked up a lot of the sauce so I had Dave make a more and it was PERFECT! I have had some different variations of chicken marsala and some of them can be very overpowering. Too much of the Marsala wine taste. If your sauce tastes too strong  just add a extra melted butter to it to calm down the wine taste. I hope that you will enjoy this as much as we did. It was great!

Saturday – Buffalo Chicken Wraps

These were very and basic, but still so yummy. We didn’t use mushrooms in ours (even though we LOVE mushrooms) we ended up using bacon. Chicken, cheese and bacon…yes please! These were great and super easy. Of course we had to make Paige’s without the buffalo sauce, but the rest of us enjoy a tiny spice in our lives! Of course ours didn’t look half as pretty as the below but at least they tasted great!

Sunday – Creamy Grilled Chicken Picata

I was hesitant about making this due to the fact that I am not a lemon fan, but I knew Dave was so I made it anyways. In the recipe it only calls for 2 chicken breasts (serving size for the whole meal is 2) so I had to double the recipe. This was SO GOOD! The lemon flavoring was not overpowering even though it felt like I put tons of lemon juice in it. My sauce wasn’t quite as creamy as shown in the picture, but Dave and I both preferred it that way. We also didn’t grill the chicken because it was raining outside and I wasn’t going to make Dave stand outside in the rain to cook chicken, so I just cooked it in a skillet.

Of course the children didn’t want to have anything to do with it at first but they did have some and that was all that mattered. I always make them at least try new foods.

I know that you are disappointed but I didn’t make any Pinterest desserts this week. I did make some brownies though. I was going through my cupboards and found a box of brownies and a can of chocolate frosting. It was like I punch the jackpot!

Did anyone notice a pattern with these recipes? Most of the were from Plain Chicken. I have peeked at a lot of their recipes and they look great and pretty for the most part. I have a feeling that they are going to be my new site for recipes! Along with Pinterest, of course!

I don’t think that I am going to continue doing this every week but it was a great way to try new recipes. We have found so many recipes that we want to use in our regular rotation. We took this week off and decided to just use whatever food we had in the house so there will not be a Pinterest Weekly Meal Plan for next week.
